XAUUSD Account Management: How Gold Managed Accounts Work
Gold is one of the most traded and most volatile markets in forex. Here's how XAUUSD account management works, what a fair arrangement looks like, and the red flags to avoid.
What is XAUUSD account management?
XAUUSD account management is a service where an experienced gold trader places trades on your trading account on your behalf. You keep ownership of the account; the manager receives trading access only and is paid a share of the profits generated.
Why gold (XAUUSD)?
- Liquidity: gold trades in huge volume during the London and New York sessions.
- Movement: daily ranges are large, creating clear trading opportunities.
- Drivers: it reacts strongly to US dollar data, interest rates and global risk sentiment.
The same volatility that creates opportunity also creates risk, which is why disciplined capital management is essential when trading gold.
How a managed gold account is set up
- You open an account in your own name with a regulated broker (MT4 or MT5).
- You sign a management agreement setting risk limits, profit split and reporting.
- You share trading access; you keep the investor (read-only) password to watch every trade.
- Profits are settled at the agreed period, usually monthly.
Profit split and the high-water mark
A fair arrangement charges a profit share only on net new profit — profit above the account's previous highest balance (the high-water mark). If the account is down one month, the manager earns nothing until it recovers past the previous peak. Typical splits range from 60/40 to 70/30 in the client's favour.
Prop-firm account management
Many traders now use prop firms. Account management can cover both the evaluation phases and the funded account, as long as the manager follows the firm's daily loss, maximum drawdown and news-trading rules. Check that your prop firm allows third-party trading before you hand over access.
Red flags when choosing a gold account manager
- Guaranteed or fixed monthly returns
- Asking you to send money to them instead of your own broker account
- No verified track record (e.g. Myfxbook)
- No stop losses, or use of martingale and grid strategies
- No written agreement
